A fly that's synonymous with flats fishing for Bonefish, the Crazy Charlie is a staple in almost any tropical saltwater destination. Created on Andros Island by guide Charlie Smith in the 1970s, the Crazy Charlie was originally designed to feed bonefish and match small glass minnows, and while it's proven itself very effective there, it also works as a general attractor pattern that can mimic anything from small crabs to shrimp. A simple yet productive pattern, this fly is tied with bead chain eyes, a calf hair wing, and a flashy ribbing body that all combine to give life and durability to this fly.
The Crazy Charlie is a fly designed for sandy flats and can fool everything from bonefish and permit to tarpon and, in the right conditions, even Northeast species like striped bass. When fishing it, you'll want to get it onto the bottom and implement a stripped retrieve, and depending on the day, the fish may want it stripped quickly and on other days, they may want a slower retrieve--the flats can be a very dynamic environment, so it's important to carry an assortment of sizes and colors, with shades of tan and pink in sizes 4-10 being commonly used. Whether you're looking to plan a trip to the Florida Keys or just want to test out an age-old pattern, the Crazy Charlie is a great pattern to have in your saltwater arsenal.
