Who It's For
When To Go
Southern Belize is known for providing great angling opportunities year-round. Typically the most consistent Permit fishing falls in the spring and summer months, from March through September. Bonefish and resident Tarpon can be found anytime around Punta Gorda.
Weather in the tropics is relatively stable throughout the year, with average highs in the 80s. The warmer months, June through August, often bring more frequent rains as well as the occasional hurricane. The cooler season falls from December through February and tends to have less rain, but cold fronts become a risk.
Permit
The Punta Gorda region of Southern Belize is home to many Permit, making this a primary target species for many anglers staying at Copal Tree. The Permit here behave like they do anywhere else: elusive, discerning, and difficult to fool. That being said, this is arguably one of the best places in Belize to target these amazing fish. If you’re looking to target Permit exclusively, consider the warm months of March through August to find the most consistency.
Tarpon
The burliest of the big three species, resident Tarpon of 20-60lbs can be found near Copal Tree year round. Known for their brawn and acrobatic jumps, Tarpon will undoubtedly test any angler’s skills and tackle.
Bonefish
Bonefish in southern Belize tend to be larger than their northern Belizean counterparts. And while many anglers consider Copal Tree to be a Permit-focused destination, Bonefish are found abundantly in the many flats of Punta Gorda. Due to their prolific numbers and their obliging feeding habits, Bonefish make an excellent fly rod target for beginners and experts alike.
Other Species
In addition to the grand slam species, other worthwhile species fin the waters of the Port Honduras Marine Reserve. Snook, Jacks, Barracuda, and others all make for fun side quests in a week of fishing at Copal Tree Lodge.
Boats
Guides at Copal Tree utilize the traditional Panga with a poling platform. These spacious, sea-worthy craft are ideally suited for fishing the flats, rivers, and lagoons of Punta Gorda.
Equipment
A range of rod sizes with matched reels will be necessary for a week at Copal Tree. We recommend bringing 4 rods: a 6-7wt for Bonefish, an 8wt all-purpose, a 9wt for Permit, and a 10-12wt for Tarpon. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.
