Who It’s For

  • Adventurous trout anglers
  • Fishing-oriented families and groups

When To Go

The fishing season in northern Patagonia runs from November through April, with certain rivers open through May. The early season from November through December is the runoff period, and can experience higher flows more conducive to float fishing. January through March are the peak summer months and offer medium flows, great wading conditions, and excellent hatches. April and May are the autumn months and offer anglers lower flows, cooler temperatures, and fantastic streamer fishing.

Brown Trout

The rivers and streams of the Rio Limay drainage feature robust populations of wild Brown Trout. Rivers like the Rio Chimehuin, Rio Collon Cura, and Rio Malleo are known for holding exceptionally large Browns up to 25 inches. While the ratio of Browns to Rainbows can vary by river, nearly every blue line in the region can hold these magnificent trout.

Rainbow Trout

Wild Rainbow Trout are common inhabitants of northern Patagonian rivers, and the Rio Limay’s tributaries are no exception. Ranging in size from 10 inches to upwards of 20 inches, the Rainbows here offer something for every angler.

Equipment

Successful fishing in northern Patagonia typically requires multiple rods with matching reels. We recommend bringing 3 rods: a 9’ 5wt for dry flies, a 9’ 6wt for nymphing, and a 9’ 7wt for streamers. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.

How should I prepare for a week of fly fishing in Argentina?

Most importantly, you should practice casting, as accuracy and presentation are paramount in trout fishing. Also, purchasing the right gear, tackle, and clothing is important - use our recommended packing lists. You should think about your goals for the trip so that you can relay them to your guides. Lastly, figure out your travel logistics well in advance.

Is Chimehuin Safaris Family Friendly?

Chimehuin Safaris is very accommodating to families, and they offer an array of additional activities such as hiking, biking, horseback tours, and wine tasting. Non-angling companions will have plenty to do other than fishing.

How many other anglers will be there?

Each package offered by Chimehuin Safaris is designed for your group exclusively. Depending on the lodges and rivers you choose, the number of other anglers can vary. However, the Rio Limay region offers a plethora of rivers and streams with relatively low fishing pressure. Compared to trout fishing in the western US, the fisheries here will feel very remote and quiet.

How does money work in Argentina?

Although credit cards are widely accepted throughout Argentina, we advise carrying enough cash in USD to cover all expenses. Many vendors will offer substantial discounts to travelers paying in USD.

Do the guides speak English?

Yes, all the guides at Chimehuin Safaris speak English.

Do I need travel insurance?

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. We recommend Travel Guard, a well-established insurance company offering excellent, affordable policies for angling travel.

What happens if I'm injured or have an emergency requiring evacuation?

Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you’re protected when things don’t go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.

Is traveling to Argentina safe?

Argentina is generally considered a safe destination for international tourists. As with any international travel, use common sense and keep your wits about you. Once at the lodge, crime is of little concern.

What kind of electrical outlets are there?

Argentina uses Type C and Type I plugs, so you’ll need a travel adapter to charge your electronic device.

What is the weather like?

The climate of northern Patagonia is mostly dry and cool, very similar to Montana and Idaho in the United States. Summer temperatures are generally mild, with average highs around 75 degrees F. Anglers should plan to dress in layers to stay protected from sun, wind, and possible rain anytime during the season.

Is tipping customary in Argentina?

Yes, tipping is customary although it is at your discretion. Tipping 15-20 % of your trip total per person is recommended. Please plan on tipping in cash.
