A fly that’s quickly become a top-producer almost anywhere you can find bonefish, the Bonefish Bitters Fly is a solid choice to have on hand, and not only does it catch bonefish, but it’s also become an excellent choice when pursuing carp in freshwater. Designed by Craig Matthews, the Bonefish Bitters isn’t representative of any specific critter, yet you can rely on it as a searching pattern, a crab imitation, and even a shrimp. Regardless of what you’re using it to imitate, it’s a simple fly that works well and is tied with rubber legs, deer hair, dumbbell eyes, and is finished with a sculpted resin head.
The Bonefish Bitters Fly can be fished just about any time of the year and can be stripped over flats, into mangroves, along channels, and in some tidal rivers as well. Popular in sizes 4-8 and in colors of amber and olive, this is a fly that should be in your box whether you’re in Mexico or the Florida Keys.
