Blue Horizon Lodge was established in 1997 by legendary Belizean guide Lincoln Westby and is heralded as the crown jewel of Permit fishing in central Belize. Tucked within the protected waters of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Blue Horizon is in the heart of “Permit Alley”, offering quick access to expansive flats and dozens of cayes. The lodge features modern comforts, excellent dining, and a laid-back atmosphere. The experienced lodge staff and guides are known for their commitment to your comfort and attention to detail.

Who It’s For

  • Dedicated Permit Anglers

When To Go

Central Belize provides anglers with incredible year-round fishing opportunities, with abundant Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon populations within the Marine Reserve. Regardless of the season, the guide staff works tirelessly to plan each day of fishing around the tidal schedule. For anglers looking to catch hefty migratory Tarpon, late April through August offers the best opportunities.

Weather in this subtropical climate is relatively stable throughout the year, with average highs in the 80s. The warmer months, June through August, often bring more frequent rains. The cooler season falls from December through February and can experience less frequent rainstorms.

Permit

Trained under the tutelage of Lincoln Westby, the guides of Blue Horizon specialize in targeting Permit. The lodge’s location on Northeast Caye was chosen specifically due to its central proximity to the world's finest permit fishery. Like anywhere else, you can expect Permit here to be highly discriminating and perceptive. With precise casting, expert guidance, and a little luck, you’ll be well-poised to release a Belizean gem.

Bonefish

Although they’re not the primary target species of most anglers at Blue Horizon, Bonefish are bountiful in select flats, and the guides know where to find them. For less seasoned flats anglers, Bones are a fabulous quarry that offer lightning-fast runs and exciting sight-fishing.

Tarpon

The largest of the big three species, resident Tarpon of 20-60lbs can be found near Blue Horizon Lodge year-round. Large migratory fish weighing over 150lbs will show up in the summer months and can make for a thrilling grand slam pursuit. Known for their strength and athletic jumps, Tarpon will undoubtedly test any angler’s skills and tackle.

Other Species

In addition to the grand slam species, other worthwhile species reside in the waters of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve including Jacks, Barracuda, and various reef species.

Boats

Guides at Blue Horizon use traditional Pangas, the trusted standard in the Caribbean. These sea-worthy craft are ideally suited for fishing the flats and running open water.

Equipment

A range of rod sizes with matched reels will be necessary for a week at Blue Horizon Lodge. We recommend bringing 4 rods: a 6-7wt for Bonefish, an 8wt all-purpose, a 9wt for Permit, and a 10-12wt for Tarpon. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.

Accommodations

Blue Horizon Lodge features five newly refurbished guest cabanas, each containing two full-size beds, a private bathroom with a shower, air conditioning, and a covered veranda. Each room also includes convenient rod racks, high-speed wireless internet, towels, and basic toiletries.

Food

The culinary program at Blue Horizon features traditional Belizean dishes with a modern flare. Fresh seafood of various types is commonly served, along with produce and meats from small, local farms. A few of our favorite dishes are the seafood serre, conch fritters, ceviche, grilled lobster, and delectable homemade desserts. Breakfasts are served continental style, so anglers can dine at their leisure. Breakfast consists of coffee or tea, fruit juice, fresh tropical fruits, baked goods, and a savory option such as quiche or stuffed fry jacks. Nourishing lunches are packed by your guides so you don’t have to even think about lunch until it's time to eat. The self-serve bar is open each evening and is stocked with local rum and mixers. Every night will also feature a unique happy hour cocktail. Try their famous “Pesky Permit”!

Connectivity

High-speed fiber optic WiFi is available throughout the lodge and in each room. Unlike many remote fishing lodges, the WiFi at Blue Horizon is fast enough to stream and download if needed. Depending on your service plan, cell service may be available at the lodge.

What skill level is required for this trip?

While novice flats anglers are welcome at Blue Horizon Lodge, we recommend this trip for intermediate to advanced-level flats anglers. Being a Permit-focused operation first and foremost, anglers should be comfortable casting heavy crab patterns accurately at 60 feet in the wind.

What should I do to prepare for a week of fly fishing in Belize?

Most importantly, you should practice casting in windy conditions. As with any saltwater trip, wind can be a major factor in Belize. Also, purchasing the right gear, tackle, and clothing is important - use our recommended packing lists. You should think about your goals for the trip, so you can relay that to your guides. And lastly, figure out your travel logistics well in advance.

Is Blue Horizon Lodge Family Friendly?

Blue Horizon Lodge is best suited for solo, hardcore permit anglers or fishing-oriented groups. Due to the remoteness of the island, there isn’t much else to do here other than fish.

How many other anglers will be there?

The lodge has a capacity of 10 anglers, making this a very intimate lodging and angling experience. On the flats, you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere - because you are!

Is the water safe to drink?

100% purified drinking water is supplied in each guest room and the main lodge, in five-gallon jugs. Drinking water is supplied on the boats in large reusable coolers. Upon check-in, you will be given a reusable water bottle for drinking water. Please help reduce the use of single-use plastic by using that water bottle during your stay.

How does money work in Belize?

The Belizean Dollar (BZD) is pegged to the US Dollar (USD) at a 2:1 ratio. US Dollars are accepted everywhere, but change will be given in Belizean dollars. Please bring enough cash to cover gratuities, departure tax, & incidentals.

Do the guides speak English?

Belize was a British colony, and English remains their official language. Blue Horizon guides speak English and Creole, and some speak Spanish.

Do I need travel insurance?

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. We recommend Travel Guard, a well-established insurance company that offers excellent, affordable policies designed for angling travel.

What happens if I'm injured or have an emergency requiring evacuation?

Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you’re protected when things don’t go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.

Is traveling to Belize safe?

Belize is generally considered a safe country for international tourists. As with any international travel, use common sense and keep your wits about you. Once at the lodge, crime is of little concern.

What kind of electrical outlets are there?

Electrical outlets are the same as in the U.S. - 110 Volt AC power.

What is the weather like?

The climate of Belize is subtropical with temperatures averaging around 80 degrees F throughout the year.  Lows during winter rarely drop below 70 and highs during the warmest months are only occasionally above 100. July and August tend to be the warmest months and cold fronts in the winter generally bring the coolest temperatures.

Is there WiFi available?

Yes, complimentary high-speed WiFi is available throughout the lodge and in each room.

Are alcoholic beverages included?

The lodge has a self-serve bar with complimentary local beer, rum, and mixers. If you want to enjoy specific libations, you will need to purchase those at the duty-free in Belize City before arrival.

Is tipping customary in Belize?

Yes, tipping is customary although it is at your discretion. Tipping 10-15 % of your trip total per person is recommended. Please plan on tipping in cash.
