The Solution is TFO’s new premium freshwater rod, featuring an upgrade in power, components, and aesthetics from previous TFO models. We’ve been excited to cast the Solution and see how it compares to the likes of the old BVK and other mid-priced rods on the market. As you’ll learn in our review, we were thoroughly impressed with its performance overall, but much may depend on your casting style and fishing situations. In this review, we’ll dive into the rod’s performance at key casting distances, its components, and some pros and cons. Read on to learn more about the new TFO Solution and whether it’s the right choice for your next freshwater rod.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Great performance at middle and longer distances
- Powerful and fun to cast with a quicker stroke
- Quality components and great aesthetics
Cons
- Heavier than average at 62gm^2 in the 5wt model
- Lacks finesse for delicate presentations within 30 feet
Who It’s For

The TFO Solution is a fast-action freshwater rod that complements a naturally faster casting stroke. It’s a great choice for fishing bigger western rivers out of a drift boat, throwing terrestrials and dropper rigs for Trout, and tossing boogles, frogs, and streamers for Bass. When longer casts and windy conditions are the name of the game, the TFO Solution has the power and speed to deliver flies accurately.
Outfit
Fit & Finish

TFO’s forte has always been performance and value, but the new Solution takes things a step further with upgraded aesthetics and components. Featuring a comfortable full-wells cork handle and an unsanded black blank, the rod bears striking resemblance to the iconic Scott Radian, which was one of the industry’s most popular freshwater rods for years. Not only does it look slick, but the Solution is kitted out with an REC recoil stripping guide, and double-foot snake guides, which are well-suited for a rod in this price range. It would be great to see Cerecoil and single-foot guides in future iterations to further reduce weight.
Flex & Feel
The casting performance of the TFO Solution is very interesting, as it breaks away from the prevalent ‘medium-fast’ actions of today’s rods, and instead embraces the snappy power of obsolete favorites like the Orvis Helios 2 and the Sage One. The Solution’s tippy action makes it a perfect fit for type-A casters who demand a high-modulus blank that can keep up with a quick casting tempo. Not all anglers will enjoy this action, particularly newer casters who need to feel the rod load more deeply. However, for intermediate to advanced casters, the Solution represents a modern take on the tip-flex rod actions that have become less common over the past decade.
At 30 feet, the Solution is almost too stiff, requiring an aggressive taper like the SA MPX to even slightly load the rod. The rod likely performs better at close range with a dropper rig or conehead streamer, but casting dries in tight quarters lacks feel and requires precise timing.
At 40 feet, the Solution showcases its crisp, high-modulus tip with excellent accuracy and improved feel. Although we tested the rod by casting yarn at targets, this middle distance will undoubtedly feel fantastic with anything from a bushy hopper to a weighted sculpin pattern.
At 60 feet, the Solution maintains lots of power and remains very accurate. For anglers who need to make quick, accurate shots at the bank from a drifting boat, this is a rod that’s up to the task.
Overall, we enjoyed throwing this fast 5wt with an SA MPX, particularly at middle and longer distances. The only notable drawbacks are its close-range performance, and a heavier-than-average swing weight of 69gm^2. For comparison, the 5wt Hardy Aydon ($550) is 62gm^2, and the Scott Session ($675) is 63gm^2. Although not a hugely noticeable difference, you may feel the effects of fatigue quicker with all-day distance casting.
