The Ross Evolution series is a longtime crowd-pleaser due to its durable nature, solid performance, and excellent machining. The new Ross Evolution LTX fly reel stays true to that ethos while improving some key features that are sure to please Ross aficionados. Read on to learn more about this dependable freshwater reel.

Weight

Weighing in at 4.9 oz for the 5/6 model, the Evolution LTX isn’t the lightest freshwater reel on the market by any means. If weight is important to you, you’ll probably want to consider something like the Ross Colorado. But in all honesty, Ross isn’t known for producing featherweight reels. Durability and solid craftsmanship, rather, are the hallmarks of the Ross lineup, so it wasn’t a big surprise to us that the LTX was on the heavier side for a premium freshwater reel.

Drag

Ross claims that the Evolution LTX exhibits four times more drag than the old Evolution LT. We didn’t nitpick this claim, but we estimate the stacked-disc drag of the LTX to be capable of delivering about 3 pounds of pressure, which is adequate for most trout and bass fishing exploits. For saltwater, we’d recommend a saltwater-purposed drag, like the Ross Evolution R Salt. The drag knob on the LTX features about two complete turns from minimum to maximum drag, which is great. This is enough range to dial in the drag you need without increased breakoff potential.

Sound

Drag sound is truly a personal preference, but we found the sound of the LTX’s drag to be a bit muted. There is also a substantial difference in incoming and outgoing sound.

Spool & Retrieval Rate

The spool of the Evolution LTX 5/6 measures a maximum diameter of 3.5”, a 1” width, and a 2.5” arbor diameter. All this equates to an admirable line retrieval rate of 8.5 inches per revolution which is enough to reel up line extremely quickly when needed. With a 6-weight line, you’ll have about 125 yards of backing capacity, increasing to 150 yards of capacity with a 5wt.

Looks & Ergonomics

Like the entire Evolution family, the LTX looks modern and extremely well-crafted. We’re huge fans of the comfortable and ergonomic canvas phenolic handle that adds grip when wet. The drag knob is also sizable and easy to grip and turn.

Warranty

As of 2023, Ross offers a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner.

Price: $475

Conclusion

Over the years, we’ve come to expect solid performance and lifelong durability with the Evolution lineup. The Evolution LTX is no exception and ranks high amongst competing freshwater reels. Some may find the weight of this reel to be a downside. But what the LTX lacks in lightness, it makes up for with above-average durability and exceptional machining. If you’re researching USA-made reels that look great and will stand the test of time, you can’t go wrong with the Ross Evolution LTX.
