Who It’s For

Hardy-Averon-Euro-Fly-Reel

The Hardy Averon Euro is designed for Euro Nymphing applications where a heavier reel is required to balance a longer (10-12’) Euro rod. Three removable weights are included with each reel, offering a total of four overall weight configurations ranging from 4.6 ounces to 6.4 ounces. The Averon Euro also features a full-cage frame which allows for ultra-thin leaders and running lines without line slippage between the frame and spool. These features also make the Averon Euro a great option for Trout Spey anglers with similar requirements.

Weight

The weight of the Hardy Averon Euro is highly adjustable, featuring three removable weights that can be screwed directly into the frame using an allen wrench. Depending on the length and weight of your rod, you can set the weight of the reel in four configurations: 4.6 ounces (no weights), 5.2 ounces (small weight), 5.8 ounces (medium weight), or 6.4 ounces (large weight). For many anglers, using the reel with no added weight or the small weight will balance 10’ rods quite well. For longer nymphing rods such as the T&T Contact 2 and Hardy Ultralite LL (11’ 2wts), the medium weight is ideal. The largest weight is likely best suited for longer trout spey rods or specialty nymphing rods that need a beefy reel to balance them properly. Though the adjustable weights might not appeal to every angler, serious Euro and Trout Spey enthusiasts will appreciate the flexibility and innovation they bring.

Drag

Hardy-Averon-Euro-Fly-Reel

You’ll get about 2-3 pounds of maximum drag strength with the Hardy Averon Euro, which is plenty of stopping power for trophy Trout in fast water. The multi-pad disc drag is exceptionally smooth, making it ideal for protecting light tippets with minimal startup inertia. This is a great drag system for a reel that will likely be relied on to slow down fish on ultra-fine tippets as light as 8x.

The Averon Euro’s drag is not completely sealed, so we recommend sticking to freshwater use only to protect the internal components from corrosion.

Sound

If you liked the sound of the discontinued Hardy Ultradisc, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Averon Euro’s sound is very similar. It delivers a crisp, metallic tone with clear differentiation between incoming and outgoing line. This is one of our favorite drag clicks on the freshwater market!

Spool & Cage Design

Hardy-Averon-Euro-Fly-Reel

When it comes to high-performance Euro reels, spool design is everything. The Ultradisc series already featured a solid spool design, and Hardy wisely carried that over to the new Averon Euro. This is a large-arbor spool that picks up line quickly, and without line pileup. It features a maximum spool diameter of 3.7 inches, a very narrow width of .88 inches, and an arbor diameter of 2.93 inches. These measurements will yield about 9.7 inches of line pickup per rotation, which is very solid for a euro reel. For comparison, the large arbor Ross Evolution LTX gives you about 8.5 inches per turn. Competition anglers will especially appreciate the performance of the Averon Euro, as efficiency is of the utmost importance in competitive angling.

The Averon Euro’s frame features a closed-cage design, allowing it to accommodate long, thin leaders with no issues of slippage. Full-cage reels also offer added durability if dropped, which bodes well for anglers who are hard on gear, especially in remote areas.

Another noticeable update from the Ultradisc is the Averon Euro’s porting design. Both reels feature highly-ported frames, but the Averon Euro has an updated pattern that looks sleek and minimalist.

Looks & Ergonomics

There’s no denying that Hardy does a fantastic job at making reels that look stunning, and the Averon Euro is no exception. It’s not much different from the Ultradisc at first glance, but upon closer inspection you’ll notice that the spool and frame porting has changed, as well as the drag knob and spool release knob, which both feature deeper knurling for improved grip. The handle remains unchanged and offers solid comfort, though a larger size would be welcomed.

Price: $395

At $395, the Hardy Averon Euro is undoubtedly a premium option for a trout reel, but its adjustability makes it a standout investment. With three removable weights, this reel can be perfectly balanced for rods ranging from 10’+ Euro nymphing setups to longer Trout Spey models. This versatility not only enhances performance but also future-proofs your gear, accommodating new rod purchases with different weight needs. For anglers who prioritize balance and adaptability in their equipment, the Averon Euro offers exceptional value.

The Hardy Averon Euro Fly Reel strikes a perfect balance between sleek design, innovative adjustability, and dependable performance. Its ability to fine-tune the reel’s weight makes it a game-changer for anglers looking to perfectly balance longer rods or adapt to new setups down the line. Sure, the adjustable weights might not be a must-have for everyone, but for those who geek out over dialing in their gear, it’s a big win. At $395, it’s not cheap, but the Averon Euro delivers the kind of versatility and quality that serious Euro nymphers will appreciate for years to come. If you’re looking for a premium reel that’s built specifically for technical nymphing and trout spey, the Hardy Averon Euro is definitely worth a look.
