A fast-sinking nymph that’s an excellent imitation for immature golden stoneflies, the Bead Head Iron Sally Fly should be in everyone’s fly box. Stoneflies are a rich source of protein and trout pay them notice at all times of the year, especially in the winter, so carrying a few of these nymphs year-round is a safe bet. The Bead Head Iron Sally Fly was made to sink quickly and ride along the bottom, which makes it a great choice when fishing fast, oxygenated waters where stoneflies dwell. And with a biot tail, two-tone body with a wire underbody, rubber legs, defined wingcase, and bead head, you can count on it to move through the water and attract fish.

The Bead Head Iron Sally can be fished down to size 18, but the most common sizes are 12-14 to match the larger nymphs that trout seem to key in on. Fishing the Bead Head Iron Sally can be done in a number of ways, whether on its own or in a multi-nymph system, but it’s definitely a good choice whenever the fish are deep, and you can rely on it from streams east to west.
