Who It’s For
When To Go
The fishing season at Estancia Arroyo Verde Lodge runs from November through April. The early season from November through December is the runoff period and can experience higher flows and challenging walk/wade conditions. January through March are the peak summer months and offer medium flows, remarkable wading conditions, and solid hatches. April brings the autumn season and offers anglers lower flows, cooler temperatures, and opportunities for exciting streamer fishing.
Brown Trout
The Rio Traful is known for quality over quantity, featuring dispersed populations of wild brown trout. These resident browns can range in size from 12 inches to well over 25 inches, making this a trophy fishery for the dedicated angler. Fishing techniques here are similar to those employed in New Zealand, requiring sight-fishing tactics and technical skills to be successful. While catching a trophy Brown Trout in the Traful is certainly challenging, the rewards can be remarkable.
Rainbow Trout
Large, wild Rainbow Trout also call Rio Traful home. Like their brown counterparts, rainbows here are characterized by their trophy potential and their ability to remain concealed. Anglers with technical skills and plenty of patience can be rewarded with powerful rainbows up to 25 inches long.
Landlocked Atlantic Salmon
In addition to Brown and Rainbow Trout, the Rio Traful features a modest run of landlocked Atlantic Salmon. Although timing their presence is seldom reliable, feisty Landlocks can make for an exciting bycatch for trout anglers. Targeting salmon typically employs trout fishing accouterments, with fish frequently falling for nymphs and streamers in the runs and pools of Rio Traful.
Equipment
Successful fishing at Estancia Arroyo Verde Lodge typically requires multiple rods with matching reels. We recommend bringing 3 rods: a 9’ 5wt for dry flies, a 9’ 6wt for nymphing, and a 9’ 7wt for streamers. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.
