Prepping for a trip to the Great Lakes, Canada, or even a saltwater excursion on the coast of Maine, Arctic Fisherman’s Blue Fox Variety Pack provides an assortment of Blue Fox Tail rings with unbeatable quality. A natural material with excellent movement, color, and durability, Blue Fox Fur has a dense underfur with similarly-lengthed guard hairs–this combination works perfectly for salmon/steelhead flies, yet equally well for patterns like small crustaceans or even large saltwater streamers. With this variety pack, you get six different colors that allow you to dial in your patterns exactly how you like while still remaining economical.
Uses
Arctic Fisherman’s Blue Fox is one of those natural materials that provide a ton of different uses. Most commonly used for tying tails and wings on salmon and steelhead flies, this fur gives excellent movement in the water while also keeping its shape well. However, Blue Fox gives the tier more than just that, as it’s an excellent material when used in composite loops or to tie tube flies, and it also works very well when tying streamer bodies, tails, wings, and heads, or for wings on small saltwater crustaceans and flies used for bonefish. And for the saltwater angler who loves to tie Hollow Fleyes, don’t discredit this material as an excellent addition in between hollow ties whenever you’re trying to add color and/or maximize forward bulk.
Comparisons
A very similar option is Hareline’s Arctic Fox Tail Hair; coming from the tail of an Arctic Fox, this material offers excellent motion in the water, and just like Blue Fox, it remains rigid and holds its shape well when in the water. Both of these furs have a soft underfur with long guard hairs, and the main difference is that Blue Fox is just a bit more coarse and tends to be a little shorter in length with less overall length in the guard hairs, so depending on the size of the fly you’re tying, one option may be a more suitable fit.
