Trout start keying in on terrestrials when August rolls around in the western US. Slapping a foam dry fly down on a large river like the Yellowstone or Madison is sure to garner some attention from a large fish. Amy’s Ant was built for times like those. A hybrid between an ant, hopper, and Stonefly, Amy’s Ant is a great pattern for a variety of freshwater river fishing scenarios when those large trout are looking for large meals. Fish it alone, with a dropper, or as the point fly in a dry fly tandem and you’ll fool more hopper-eating fish.
Foam, High-Floating, Dry Fly - Amy’s Ant, like other terrestrials, is characterized by foam, rubber legs, a deer hair wing, and a long shank hook. This foam dry fly comes in two different colors and three different sizes for a variety of applications on the water. Like all of the flies we carry, it’s hand-tied. This particular fly is an Umpqua pattern tied by Jack Dennis, Umpqua Signature Tyer.
Dry Fly River Fishing - This is a pattern that’s designed to be fished as a dry fly on rivers, streams, and lakes. It’s a great pattern to also add a dropper to because of its foam body. Use when ants are present, in the late summer when hoppers are present, or as a Stonefly imitation. This fly works best with a slightly heavier tippet and fools large fish.
Ants, Hoppers, Terrestrials - ‘Amy’s Ant’ is obviously an ant pattern, but it’s large enough to be eaten as a hopper, beetle, and Stonefly, too. This is a similar pattern to the Chubby Chernobyl and can also be used as an attractor on small streams.
Trout - As you’ve probably gathered, this is a trout fly designed for fishing in rivers, streams, lakes, and freshwater environments. This isn’t a saltwater fly and should be used only when targeting trout that are feeding on the surface or fish that are likely to rise for a large meal.
