Whether it’s the first caddis emergence of the year and you need a box full of pupae to catch those slashing fish or you’re tying up some soft hackles to hit an afternoon sulfur hatch, it doesn’t matter what emerging insect the fish are feeding on, Ahrex’s FW521 Barbless Emerger Hooks will help you match them all. A strong hook with an appropriately curved shank that’s available in sizes ranging from 6 through 18, the FW521 Emerger Hook lets you match most large to small emerging insects. With a barbless construction, black nickel finish, and chemically sharpened point, the FW521 is a seriously sharp hook without the use of a barb, making it easier on the fish we’re after and ourselves. The perfect choice for when trout are chowing down on bugs just under or in the surface film, Ahrex has all of your emerger needs covered with their FW521 Barbelss Emerger Hooks.

Uses

Ahrex’s FW521 Barbless Emerger Hooks are designed for imitating emerging insects, especially caddis pupae and mayflies working their way to the water’s surface. This hook has a curved shank, which makes imitating the natural profile of these insects as they get ready to hatch fast and easy. Although this hook was built with emerging insects in mind, it’s also a solid choice for tying larvae and nymph patterns when you want a slight bend in their profile, small streamers, and it’s even a popular choice as a stinger hook on tube flies.

Comparisons

If you want this exact bend and build in a barbed option, then Ahrex’s FW520 Hooks are exactly that. However, another comparable hook is Core’s C1150 Emerger Hooks. These hooks have a very similar bend that isn’t too dramatic and they’re offered in a similar same range of sizes (8 through 16). The main difference between these two hooks is that the FW521 Hooks have a black nickel finish, while the C1150 Hooks have a bronze finish, so depending on what you’re chasing, one hook’s material may be a better choice.
