The Accommodations

Intricate Bay Lodge is a boutique fly fishing lodge on the banks of Lake Iliamna in the heart of the finest Rainbow Trout fishing in the nation. The lodge is almost brand new (built in 2014) and features an array of amenities you’ll only find at the finest 5-star hotel. Seriously. The food is incredible, the accommodations are breathtaking, and the folks at IBL thought of everything in the building of their new lodge (even a wood-fired hot tub!). Leave your waders and fishing gear in the lodge’s state-of-the-art mudroom, shower before appetizers and dinner, and watch the sunset through the lodge’s wall of windows or from the expansive deck while enjoying a drink from the bar or a game of darts. This trip is as much about the accommodations as it is about fishing.

The Fishing

Mid-June is prime time for post-spawn Rainbow Trout fishing. These trout spawn in the early spring and are protected until the second week of June. Because they have expended a lot of energy during the spawn and haven’t eaten a whole lot, they’re ravenous during the first few weeks of June (plus they haven’t seen an angler for 8 months). Trout will swim 20+ feet for a large meal during this time period and most fishing is done with streamers or mice. Don’t forget your dry flies, however, because the dry fly fishing and nymph fishing can be quite productive during this time period as well. This is first and foremost a trophy Rainbow Trout trip but guests can also expect to catch Arctic Char, Dolly Varden, and Grayling.

The Flyout Culture

Flyouts are a chance to visit new water, to see Alaska from the air, and to cast a fly on some of the most remote, productive rivers in the region. Most of the flying is done via Dehavilland Beaver, a floatplane that carries gear and anglers over rolling hills and the Alaskan tundra. These planes are seriously reliable and are used across Alaska and Canada. Most flights are within 30 minutes of the lodge and the flying culture is ultimately safe.

Travel Notes

As a flyout lodge, IBL is located on a remote part of Lake Iliamna. Don’t expect to see any cars or trucks during your stay. That means travel details require a flight to Anchorage and a flight from Anchorage to the town of Iliamna. After you make it to Iliamna, the lodge’s floatplanes will pick you up and fly you out to the lodge.

Plan to land in Anchorage no later than 1 pm on the 13th to catch the afternoon flight to Iliamna. Flights to Iliamna can be purchased through Iliamna Air Taxi and are not included in the price of the trip. The flight from Anchorage to Iliamna is roughly 40 minutes and departs at either 3:30 pm or 4:30 pm. Similarly, plan a return flight from Iliamna to Anchorage after 1 pm on the 20th and your flight home from Anchorage after roughly 4 pm. If you have questions about travel logistics (or any logistics) feel free to call the shop.

The flights to Anchorage and from Anchorage to Iliamna are not included in the price of the trip.
