Orvis Helios 2 Freshwater Fly Rod Reviews

Great nymphing rod Review by Douglas

I purchased this as a 5 wt 7'9", mid- flex with an intermediate line. I love to use this for fishing larger fish during the fall and winter season. I use small flies, but have to be able to cast accurately in the trout feeding lanes. This rod is stiff with the power, but still has the feel that I need to be able to cast accurately every time into these lanes, and feel each nibble under the water. This may not be a common use for this rod; however I will not use anything else for this purpose.
    10ft 4-wt H2 for Nymphing Review by A-ROB

I tested this rod against the Sage One and Scott Radian in the same length/wt. The Orvis is the smoothest of the bunch and can throw a lot of line when you want to. In most cases when nymphing you won't be doing that, but if you fish dries in a lake, this would be a great rod. I feel that is a bit too stiff when nymphing in close. I would prefer it to bend a bit deeper into the middle section of the rod like a mid-flex H2, or even lower like a Winston BIIIx Super 10.
9' 5wt mid-flex - Your all around go to rod. Review by Seth

After reading the 5wt shootout I decided to go with the 9' 5wt mid-flex. I fish this rod on moderate size NY and VT rivers as well as much larger rivers like the Hoosatonic (CT), Winooski (VT) and in all situations the H2 performs as promised. I mostly nymph, but when I through dries or chuck streamers the rod has the touch and feel and the backbone to get the job done. I've fished a Sage One and Scott Radian but honestly think the H2 out performs them in every way, especially when playing a fish!!!

This is one great rod! I initially got the Helios 2 5 wt tip flex last year and was so impressed I picked up the 6 wt this year after extensive testing both on stream against the Sage One, Loomis NRX LP, Hardy Zenith and Zephrus, Scott Radian, and Winston Blllx. Frankly, there was no comparison, although the Zephrus came relatively close. Incredibly light in hand with great tip sensitivity and power to spare the Helios 2 does it all. From 25 to 70 ft it loads effortlessly, remains extremely accurate and takes little effort to really bomb it out there when necessary. Plus, fit and finish is top rate This rod not only makes you a better caster , but a better fisherman.
